My purple yam sourdough experiment from last weekend. Colour was on point, the dough was a little dense (as expected by adding the yam). Fougasse bread. A marvellous, crusty flat bread that is oh so fun to try and shape (historically to resemble a leaf or sheath of wheat). It was also traditionally used to test the temperature of a wood oven prior to baking the rest of the bread. Of course, now that I’ve done several of these babies, my itch to experiment is taking over. What fun shapes can I create?! What fun toppings can I add?!! I think I’ve caught a baking bug. This was my first ever tart!! And first time making chocolate ganache. Hazelnut tart with chocolate ganache, topped with candies mandarin oranges, blueberries and blackberries. It was decadent. Need to practice both tart crust and ganache making to get it crispier and smoother, but overall was really happy with the end result. My advice to new bakers, don’t be afraid to attempt new challenges. Only way to get better is keep baking. Learn from the failures. Also, unless you’ve burnt the crap out of it or mistaken salt for sugar, your friends and family will gladly still want to try your creations—imperfections and all. At least mine do. Wine Gums (but as a cake). I recently received a free copy of Joe Beef: Surviving the Apocalypse: Another Cookbook of Sorts from @appetite_randomhouse to review. Having fallen in love with their first book, I was super excited for this one. It didn’t disappoint. Bonus, I finally have a recipe for homemade soap! This book is much more than just a collection of recipes. It’s ridiculously funny, full of stories, and some of the recipes definitely leave you thinking ‘is this for real?’ Exactly how I had hoped for. I still day dream about the gateau reverse aux truffes recipe. You can read my complete review on my blog (link in bio), along with the recipe for wine gums. I was having some issues with my candy molds and opted to test out in a mini bundt pan. I mean how can you go wrong with a wine cake?? Candied mandarin oranges. This was the perfect way to use up all the oranges I had from the holidays. I dipped some in chocolate for a quick treat and used some more to top a hazelnut chocolate tart (pictures from the tart coming soon). Super simple to make too. In a large saucepan, heat a simple syrup of equal parts sugar to water. Add sliced oranges (one layer only) and simmer on low/medium heat until translucent. Hazelnut Nutella Star Bread. I’ve made several different variations of this delicious treat over the Christmas break, including a cinnamon star and roasted red peppers and pesto.
